Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the extraordinary women who have shaped our lives with their love and wisdom. For those of us caring for a mother with Alzheimer’s, this day feels a bit different.
As I care for my mom, Mother’s Day serves as a reminder of her strength and grace. Despite the challenges we face, I am reminded of what was and the love she tries to show, even in the face of her biggest health challenge.
Mother’s Day may look different now, without the celebrations of years past, but what truly matters is the love we share. It’s about honoring who my mom is, appreciating her presence in my life, and celebrating the love that binds us together.
Despite life's twists and turns, we still manage to have a few moments of joy and connection. It could be an occasional dance 💃 or searching for her teeth 😂, we continue to take one day at a time and do our best to live, love and laugh. And of course there are occasions when I want to cry. 😢
This Mother’s Day, I invite you to join me in celebrating the strength of mothers everywhere. Let us focus on the moments of love and connection, treasuring each interaction as a gift. And let us remember that the true essence of Mother’s Day lies in honoring the women who have shaped our lives with their love and compassion.
I am grateful to God for blessing me to be the mom of two beautiful children who are now adults. Parenting was/is not always easy but it has great rewards.
I cannot conclude this blog without expressing gratitude to my village. Both of my grandmothers played pivotal roles in my life. "Big Mama" Delia Mae Zachary Stephens (1986) and "Gigi" Flordia Mae Conner Gillette (2013) left an incredible mark of love and wisdom on my life journey. Additionally, I must acknowledge my (former) mother-in-law, "Granny" Lady Barker, who joined me in raising my children and continues to treat me with kindness. Their unwavering support and love have shaped me into the person I am today.
